'Labor and Leisure' opens at UH gallery

Advertiser Staff

The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) said, "The end of labor is to gain leisure." However, recent national studies show Americans are working longer hours, and taking less time for vacation than they did just a few years ago.

Making time to contemplate the relationship between labor and leisure, Tom Klobe, gallery director and a recipient of the Living Treasures of Hawai'i 2005 award, developed the exhibition "Labor and Leisure." Collections in Honolulu yielded a wide range of artwork that dealt with both topics, including works by internationally recognized artist Jean Charlot (1898-1979) and Francis Haar (1908-1997).

The exhibit is on view at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Art Gallery, today through April 15.

An opening reception takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. today.

Gallery hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, noon to 4 p.m. Sundays; closed Good Friday, March 25, and Easter, March 27.

Admission is free.
