Water board targets leaks

Advertiser Staff

Consumers can protect O'ahu's water resources and maybe reduce their sewage and water bills at the same time by checking for leaky plumbing fixtures, according to the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.

The board detected more than 3,100 property leaks last year, and has designated March 6-12 as Detect-a-Leak Week to focus public attention on leak detection and repair.

Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki has donated 20,000 leak detection dye tablets to help check for toilet leaks. The tablets are available for free at satellite city halls, hardware stores and the Board of Water Supply lobby at 630 S. Beretania St.

The Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i and the Sierra Club's O'ahu Group also are participating in the Detect-a-Leak campaign.

Homeowners can sign up for a free Board of Water Supply leak check by mailing in entry forms found in Detect-a-Leak advertisements and promotional material. The deadline is March 12. Entry forms also are available at www.boardofwatersupply.com.

Home and business owners who want to conduct a leak inspection on their own can get information by calling 748-5041.
