We need assurance of Moanalua preservation

The moment of truth may be nearing for two magnificent tracts of land — the Moanalua Gardens area and Moanalua Valley — both part of the legacy of Samuel Mills Damon.

These beautiful lands, 3,700 acres in total, must remain in their present use for the public to enjoy in perpetuity.

The state, the city and interested non-profits such as the Nature Conservancy must work with the Damon trustees to ensure their public-spiritedness doesn't falter.

That is also the sense of lawmakers, as resolutions to this effect have appeared in the Legislature and the City Council.

Now, as Damon Estate beneficiaries plan to meet on this issue in the coming days, is a good time to produce assurances that these lands will be preserved for "appropriate recreational and educational purposes" for a grateful public to cherish forever.

That, indeed, would be a beautiful legacy.
