30- to 35-foot waves forecast tonight

Advertiser Staff

High surf with rapidly rising waves that could reach 30-35 feet will hit north-facing shores across the Islands this afternoon and tonight, the National Weather Service said.

West-facing shores will see surf of 16-22 feet.

The surf will arrive at Kaua'i this afternoon and O'ahu by this evening.

A high surf warning from the weather service has been issued for the north- and west-facing shores of Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu and Moloka'i through tomorrow. The warning is for the west-facing shores of the Big Island through tomorrow.

A high surf warning means that damaging surf is expected along the affected shorelines, the weather service said.

Coastal residents should make precautions for large waves and resulting coastal flooding, the weather service said.

The weather services cautions swimmers to stay out of the water and well away from the shore break to avoid hazardous wave action and strong rip currents.
