ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
What to boot out to free up space
Advertiser Staff
Trying to streamline your life? In "Scaling Down: Living Large in a Smaller Space," authors Judi Culbertson and Marj Decker recommend unloading:
• Gifts or artwork from family or friends that you feel you have to display or keep because you're afraid the giver will be upset. • Inoffensive duplicates, such as collapsible umbrellas. (Why not have six or seven?)
As part of Detect-a-Leak Week, which lasts through Saturday, the Board of Water Supply asks residents to take the time to check for leaks:
Turn off all water faucets and other water-using fixtures, then check your water meter to see if the dial is moving. If it is, you have a leak. Call a plumber and have the leak repaired as soon as possible.
For more information about leak detection, or details on how to be one of 75 single-family homes on O'ahu to receive free leak-detection assistance, see www.hbws.org or call 748-5041.
If you live on O'ahu, stop water flow by shutting off the property valve, on the property side of the meter. Then seek assistance, if necessary.
• Appliances, computer equipment or stereo systems that have been replaced by ones that work better.
Check your home for leaks
Cut the power first if your home floods
If you come home to an indoor flood, shut off the electrical power to your entire house at the breaker box, as well as the water supply to your home.
