Kailua preschool gets accredited

Sunshine School, a Kailua preschool, has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Early Education of Young Children, the nation's leading organization of early childhood professionals.

"NAEYC Accreditation lets families in our community know that children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences," said Margarette Keegan, director of the school that was founded in 1978.

Keegan and the school's Julia Kalakau are finalists for the Good Beginnings Alliance eighth annual "Ho'olaulima No Na Keiki" award, which honors outstanding professionals who provide quality early experiences.



Brass quintet to open series

The Honolulu Brass Quintet opens the Chamber Music Hawai'i spring concerts at Windward Community College featuring Vivaldi's "Concerto for Two Trumpets" at 7:30 p.m. March 14 at Paliku Theatre.

Each piece will be introduced by members of the ensemble. The ensemble members are Mark Schubert, Ken Hafner, Wade Butin, Jim Decker and Dave Saltzman.

The program includes refreshments and an opportunity to meet the musicians.

Tickets at the door are $20 and $15 for seniors. There is a military discount and admission is free to students with identification.

Legislators to hold meetings

Windward legislators will host community meetings to hear about issues concerning constituents this month.

The meetings are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at He'eia Elementary School Library and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 22 at Maunawili Elementary School Cafeteria.

State Reps. Pono Chong, D-49th (Maunawili, Enchanted Lake, Kane'ohe), and Ken Ito, D-48th (Kane'ohe), will attend the He'eia meeting and Reps. Chong and Tommy Waters, D-51st (Waimanalo, Lanikai), will host the Maunawili meeting.



Advisory council meets this week

HILO, Hawai'i — The Governor's West Hawai'i Advisory Committee will meet Wednesday to review state Legislature proposals related to affordable housing and public housing.

Stephanie Aveiro, executive director of the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawai'i, will be the featured speaker at the meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Kailua, Kona, mayor's office at 75-5706 Kuakini Highway, Suite 103.

Gov. Linda Lingle created advisory committees to give the Neighbor Islands a stronger voice in state government.

Group for blind plans gathering

The Hawai'i Association of the Blind will hold its 38th Annual Convention Saturday at the Pagoda Hotel, 1525 Rycroft St. in the Makai Room. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the call to order at 9 a.m. and lunch at noon.

Featured speakers will be Jeff Thom, president of the California Council of the Blind; Dave Eveland of Ho'opono and Fusako Miyashiro of the Library for the Blind.

An evening banquet will feature no-host cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Cost of the dinner is $10 for HAB members and $25 for nonmembers. Reservations must be made by today by calling 861-1300 or 923-8765.



School offering scholarships

The Hawai'i Technology Institute is offering scholarships to new college students of Hawaiian ancestry who want to attend remedial classes in English and math.

The Ka Liu 'Oihana scholarships, offered for each of the institute's 17-week trimesters, are funded by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

The institute, which offers a range of financial aid programs to students of various ethnicities, teaches all students with a high-school diploma or equivalent. For information, call the institute at 522-2700.
