Abubo finishes second in Australia

Megan Abubo of Waialua placed second in the Roxy Pro yesterday at Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia.

Abubo lost in the final to Australian wildcard Stephanie Gilmore, 14.0-7.1. The final day of competition was held in 3- to 4-foot waves.

"I'm really happy because I've never even made it past the third round here," Abubo said.

The Roxy Pro is the first contest of the 2005 World Championship Tour for women.

Gilmore, 17, is a high school senior and was invited to compete in the event because she is Australia's junior champion. She received $10,000, while Abubo got $6,000.

Because Gilmore is not a world tour surfer, Abubo will be No. 1 in the first rankings of the year.

Abubo eliminated Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard in the quarterfinals.

In the men's Quiksilver Pro, three-time world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i advanced to the fourth round. His younger brother, Bruce, also advanced along with Fred Patacchia Jr. of Hale'iwa.

Hawai'i surfers Sunny Garcia and Kalani Robb were eliminated.

MEMORIAL SERVICE

Apisa to speak at Kenney's service

A memorial service for Dick Kenney, a three-sport star at Iolani School who played on two national championship football teams at Michigan State in the 1960s, will be held tonight at Kawaiaha'o Church.

Family visitation begins at 6 p.m., with the service scheduled to start at 6:30.

Among the speakers will be Bob Apisa, a Farrington High standout who played with Kenney at Michigan State. Kenney, barefoot placekicker, kicked a 47-yard field goal to help the No. 2 Spartans tie No. 1 Notre Dame, 10-10, on Nov. 19, 1966 in what has been called college football's "Game of the Century."

Kenney, who was a counselor at Pearl City High for 29 years, died on Feb. 23. He was 59.
