EPA cites Pepsi for illegal discharge at 'Aiea facility

Advertiser Staff

The Environmental Protection Agency today said it has ordered Pepsi Bottling Co. to comply with Clean Water Act requirements at the company's bottling facility in 'Aiea.

The EPA said Pepsi does not have the necessary permit to discharge storm water that flows into Halawa Stream and then into Pearl Harbor's East Loch.

The EPA also said Pepsi sent acidic industrial effluent to the sewer system in violation of the "low pH" requirement under the agency's general pretreatment regulations.

The EPA's order sets out a schedule for Pepsi to submit a revised storm water permit application and take steps to prevent industrial pollutants from entering storm water runoff. The facility must also measure pH levels and submit monitoring results.
