MVT fund-raiser to honor Shari Lynn

CURTAIN CALLS: Shari Lynn, who has been chirping on Island stages and in clubs for 20 years, will be the 2005 Manoa Marquee honoree in the Manoa Valley Theatre salute "Come to the Cabaret With Shari Lynn," the theater group's annual spring fund-raiser next month.

Shari, a teacher at La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls, will be feted in a dinner-and-music evening from 6 to 10:30 p.m. April 2 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. John Rampage, Diamond Head Theatre artistic director who is guest-directing MVT's production of "Cabaret" (premiering tomorrow), will be master of ceremonies, and Shari will join Andrew Sakaguchi (who is appearing as the Emcee in the Kander-Ebb musical) for the show.

The event features a buffet, hosted drinks and a silent auction; cabaret attire is suggested. Dance music will be by the Motor City Angels.

Tickets are $175, with premium tables of 10 available at $3,500, $2,500 and $1,750 levels. For reservations, call Manoa Valley Theatre at 988-6131. ...

So what does Joey Caldarone do on his nights off from the hit Army Community Theatre musical "Miss Saigon," where he stars as The Engineer Thursdays through Saturdays (extended through March 19) at Richardson Theatre? He soaks up shows, that's what. Took in the Hawaii Opera Theatre's "Turandot" and Saint Louis School's "Aida." On a night he was too pooped to go out, he tuned in to Fox's "American Idol" to discover that one of his New Jersey high school pals, Constantine, was a contestant. ...

Larry Paxton — just completing a role in the Hawaii Opera Theatre's "Turandot" — has been prepping 20 of his University of Hawai'i music students to audition tonight and tomorrow for Army Community Theatre's "The Secret Garden," in which he stars in May. Glenn Cannon will direct. ...

ITEMIZATIONS: Jon de Mello, CEO of the Mountain Apple Co., still is aglow from his Grammy Awards participation with the nominated Brothers Cazimero last month in Los Angeles. "It was such an exciting thrill, being surrounded by all that class, all that music. The epiphany was the realization that there was so much quality," he cooed.

And the Palm Records gang, led by guitarist-producer Charles Michael Brotman, already is planning a follow-up to its first Hawaiian Grammy award winner, "Slack Key Guitar, Vol. 2." Volume 3 will assemble sterling ki ho'alu strummers. ...

The March issue of Outside magazine, now on the stands, is loaded with Hawai'i morsels. As part of "The Great Hawaiian Island-Off," where writers flag things to do, editorial director Alex Heard recommends Don Tiki, which thrills group co-founder Lloyd Kandell. ...

The Surfers were on stage together for the first time since Jan. 16, 1980 when they reunited for the recent "Hawaiians at Heart" fund-raising concert at Kapono's at the Aloha Tower Marketplace. It benefited the American Heart Association. Joining Clayton Naluai were Pat Sylva, Bernie Ching and Joe Stevens. Stevens performed in memory of Alan Naluai, who died four years ago. ...

When the Honolulu Jazz Quartet performed at the Honolulu Club last Wednesday, keyboardist Jeannette Trevias filled in for Dan Del Negro, captivating the audience with her vocals on "At Last." It was the first time group leader John Kolivas had worked with Trevias since they gigged together in Lea Salonga's Hawai'i and Guam concerts last year. Next up for HJQ: a show from 6 to 8 pm. March 26 at Pearlridge Downtown. ...

PEOPLE IN PARADISE: Tom Vitorino, manager of The Doors, dined at George Mavrothalassitis' Chef Mavro last week and loved the six-course tasting menu, prompting this response: "I wish we had a Chef Mavro in Los Angeles!" ...

Cheri Schoch was visiting recently from Scottsdale, Ariz., with children Randall, 12, and Victoria, 11, and naturally had dinner at husband Randy's restaurant, Ruth's Chris Steak House in Restaurant Row. She was with Randall's godfather, former University of Hawai'i football standout and San Francisco 49er Levi Stanley, when in walked Pat Bowlen, owner of the Denver Broncos, with wife, Annabel. Pat and Randy used to be partners in both Nick's Fishmarket and the Black Orchid. Also with Pat were his two married daughters who live here, Amie Klemmer with her husband, Howie, and Beth Harbottle with her husband, Ikaika. ...
