Big Isle girl, 10, in hospital 1 month

HILO, Hawai'i — A 10-year-old Big Island girl remained in critical condition in a Honolulu hospital a month after she was removed from a Puna home with festering wounds on her head and body, authorities said yesterday.

Police said yesterday they have been discussing the case with prosecutors, but have not yet made any arrests in the case.

Derick Dahilig, public information officer for the state Department of Human Services, said the department still has temporary custody of the girl, who is at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

On Feb. 7 paramedics were called to a home in the 'Ainaloa subdivision in Puna, where they found the girl suffering from numerous cuts and sores. People who know the girl say her mother had shuttled her from caregiver to caregiver over the course of many months, and police said she had been staying at the 'Ainaloa home for about three months.

Arrest made in 2004 shooting

A 63-year-old Nanakuli man was arrested Sunday in connection with an incident last August that left a 43-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the foot.

Police said the two men were arguing at a home on Kahau Street when the older man went to his car, came back with a gun and shot the younger man in the foot.

Members of the Wai'anae Police district crime reduction unit found the suspect yesterday and arrested him on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and two weapons offenses.

Man charged in alleged assault

A 45-year-old Waimanalo man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly assaulted his 51-year-old cousin.

Police said the man went to his cousin's house and became upset because she was unable to help him with his stalled car.

Police said the man left the home before officers arrived but was found about 4 p.m. and arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault after he approached a police officer to file a report on an unrelated matter.

Suspect sought in robbery near UH

Police opened a robbery investigation Sunday after a homeless man told investigators a stranger took his backpack at gunpoint about 11:30 p.m. near the University of Hawai'i.

The man told police he was cooking dinner for himself and his girlfriend when he looked back and saw a man walking away from him.

He said he glanced down, noticed his backpack was missing and went to confront the stranger. The man said he was approaching the stranger when the stranger turned around and ordered him to step back while holding a gray pistol in his left hand and pointing it at him.

The suspect ran from the area before officers arrived, police said.
