BUSINESS BRIEFS
Pay cuts ruled OK at Aloha

Advertiser Staff

Some 330 Aloha Airlines mechanics and inspectors will be forced to accept 10 percent pay cuts and freezes to their defined benefit plan at least until April 5, a federal bankruptcy judge ruled yesterday.

Aloha officials sought the ruling after members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers' District Lodge 142 twice voted down tentative agreements calling for pay cuts and other concessions.

Aloha, which filed for federal bankruptcy protection on Dec. 30, said both management and unionized workers are being asked to take 10 percent pay reductions to help the company save $60 million and emerge from bankruptcy.

Plant biologists book convention

The American Society of Plant Biologists has booked a meeting at the Hawai'i Convention Center in 2009.

The meeting is expected to draw 2,000 delegates and generate $6.3 million in visitor spending and $520,000 in state tax revenue. It's among 11 bookings resulting from a promotion to delegates of the Professional Convention Management Association's conference here in January.
