Get yourself in SAT mode

 •  Trying to score on the SAT

After you've done all the SAT studying you could possibly do, you can also prepare yourself physically and mentally hours before the test:

• Have everything you need for the test ready the night before, advises "The Official SAT Study Guide: For the New SAT." Be sure to have a photo ID, your test admission ticket, several No. 2 pencils, a calculator with new batteries, a watch, directions to the test center and transportation arranged.

• "Wear comfortable clothes," said Myron Arakawa, director of college counseling at Punahou School. "You may be sitting for three hours." Arakawa also recommends bringing a light jacket or sweater — because some testing rooms with air conditioning can get cold — as well as a mini-pack of tissues, "in case you get the sniffles."

• "Get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast — you'll need food for the brain," said Lei Kudo, post-high-school counselor at Kaimuki High School.

• "Be there (at the test center) on time," said Kathryn Cole, a Kaimuki junior.

• "Leave your cell phone at home or make sure you turn it off," Arakawa said.

• Keep things in perspective, said Steve Brennan, director of advising for College Connections Hawaii. "I would always tell students, 'Don't let your self-image be determined by an SAT score.' "
