Clean, dry those shoes, slippers

With all the rain we've been having, chances are you've got a pair of wet shoes or slippers in your entryway or closet. If so, they are a magnet for mildew, especially if they contain any leather.

To prevent mildew on shoes: Let them air dry and clean them as soon as possible. Use the blunt edge of a knife and a sponge on most leathers and a soft brush on suede or fabric shoes.

To keep soft leather or fabric shoes from losing shape while drying, stuff them with paper towels or newspaper.

Never put damp footwear in a dark closet.

FINAL WORD

Brian Williams | NBC anchor on airing a tribute to Dan Rather's career tonight:

"It's a tip of the ol' Stetson to a great man. Since he's a Texan, he'll appreciate those references."
