The city Department of the Medical Examiner has identified Masako Maruya as the pedestrian who was killed Monday night while trying to cross an intersection near the Kamehameha Shopping Center in Kalihi.

Police traffic investigators have said Maruya was in a marked crosswalk and was crossing Makuahine Street from east to west with a green light in her favor about 6 p.m. when she was hit by a pickup truck that was turning left from Hala Drive onto Makuahine.

She died at The Queen's Medical Center at about 11:45 p.m.

Mercury spilled in science class

A small mercury spill at Farrington High School caused the evacuation of a classroom yesterday.

An emergency hazardous materials response team was called to the school after a student accidentally broke a thermometer containing mercury in a freshman science class, Farrington principal Catherine Payne said.

No students required hospitalization, but a few changed their clothes as a precaution, Payne said. The classroom will remain closed today so tests can be performed to ensure there is no further danger.

The school is using the incident to inform students about the danger of mercury, a toxic liquid metal that gives off harmful vapors.

A 51-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with the Feb. 12 robbery of the Kamehameha Shopping Center branch of Bank of Hawaii.

No break found in sewer pipe

City crews feared there was yet another rupture in a sewer pipe on Kalaniana'ole Highway in Niu Valley on Tuesday night, but found out after digging up the pipe that it was intact.

The pipe has ruptured in roughly the same spot three times in the past month. The 45-year-old pipe was thought to have ruptured again Tuesday night, because freshly laid asphalt had started to buckle and moisture was appearing from underground.

The city plans to install an emergency bypass line and a permanent underground replacement for the main.

Steel plates were used to cover the trench that crews dug on Kalaniana'ole Highway near the Niu Shopping Center. In the previous breaks, the 16-inch cast iron pipe spilled untreated sewage into storm drains that lead to the ocean.
