Laugh it up at Hawaiian Hut

Get your laughs in this weekend at the Comedy Kanikapila, presented by stand-up comic Kaleo Pilanca. Local comedians taking part in the laugh attack include Stan Egi, Mo Dixon, Shawn Felipe, Aimee Baxa, Elroy and Da Hawaiian Guy from Molokai. DJ Marco and slack-key artist Curtis Silva also perform. The show is dedicated to the late Jon Mozo, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the tsunami relief fund.

Spotlight on Tahiti

The 3rd annual Heiva I Honolulu, celebrating the songs and dances of Tahiti, continues at the Waikiki Shell.

The 3rd annual Heiva I Ho-nolulu continues through the weekend, featuring songs and dances of Tahiti plus a Polynesian arts and crafts fair. Today's events include solo and group competition and cultural activities. Tomorrow closes with the final day of competition and an awards ceremony. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. each day.

Coming together

You'll see it's a small world after all as UH-Manoa comes alive during International Night 2005. Sponsored by the college's International Student Association, International Student Services and Campus Center Activity Council, this year's cultural fete takes on the theme "Divided By Oceans, United By Heart." The night is dedicated to the Indian Ocean tsunami victims and includes ethnic performances from more than 20 countries and cultural booths with games, food and learning activities. Represented countries and regions include Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Thailand and Europe.

Young voices in poetry slam

Teen poets get a chance at the mike Saturday when Youth Speaks Hawai'i hosts a public slam competition for students from all around the island. Founded by HawaiiSlam, Youth Speaks Hawai'i had been holding free slam poetry workshops for teens at The ARTS at Marks Garage since February. The tournament will be hosted by members of HawaiiSlam, with the top four winners going on to compete in the 2005 International Youth Poetry Slam in San Francisco. Entrants must preregister.

Young talents with the orchestra

The eight winners of the 2005 Honolulu Symphony Hawaii Youth Concerto Competition will perform in concert during a magical evening. From 11 to 17 years old, the young musicians will perform with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra on instruments including cello, harp, piano and violin. The program includes works by Mozart, Haydn, Paganini, Handel and Rachmaninoff. The winners are Riana Anthony, Maile Cha, Tiffany Cheung, Monika Haar, Melody Rose Lindsay, TJ Tario, Ryan Hiroaki Tsukamoto and Eric Wu. Joan Landry conducts.

Peterson in two gigs

Hitmakers from the Philippines

FilStar Entertainment and the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i present an ensemble of top Filipino talent with a concert featuring The Philippines' Greatest Hitmakers. The balladeers will perform group and solo works reminiscent of Filipino pop culture. The Hitmakers are, clockwise from back left, Rey Valera, Rico J. Puno, Hajji Alejandro, Nonoy Zuniga and Marco Sison. Local talents Abeth Insong and A2C (Troy and Cheesa Laureta) also perform. Part of the proceeds benefit the Hawaii Filipino-American Relief Committee.
