Police have opened a second-degree assault case after a 5-month-old boy was brought to Tripler Army Medical Center with a broken arm yesterday.

The boy was brought to the hospital by his father at about 10 a.m. yesterday.

He told police that he left the child unattended on the kitchen sink while he went to answer the phone.

When he returned, the man told police, he found his son on the floor. The man is a resident of Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe Bay.

No arrests were made yesterday.

Kaua'i man, 75, fatally shot

A 75-year-old Kaua'i man died Wednesday at an O'ahu hospital after suffering a gunshot wound.

Honolulu police have classified the case as an unattended death, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Kaua'i Police Department.

It was not clear whether the wound was self-inflicted or the result of a homicide attempt.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen on Kaua'i and was flown to The Queen's Medical Center. He died shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
