O'ahu temple celebrates Purim

Advertiser Staff

The annual Purim Celebration at Temple Emanu-El is set for 9:30 a.m. to noon Sunday at the temple, 2550 Pali Highway.

The event, marking the Jewish holiday of Purim, also includes a benefit sale of hamantaschen, the traditional pastry of the holiday. Pre-orders will continue through today in the "Heavenly Hamantaschen" sale, a fund-raiser for The Honolulu Community Jewish Preschool.

Purim celebrates the deliverance of the Jews from Haman, descendant of a king who attacked them. Haman lived in the days of Queen Esther of Persia; the triangular hamantaschen are shaped like the hat he wore.

Pre-orders of hamantaschen — $10 per baker's dozen — can be taken by phone, 595-7451; or fax, 595-6306. Orders should specify the flavor (poppy, prune, apricot, berry, chocolate or assorted).

For more information, call Ken Aronowitz, 595-7521.
