Families sue over fatal copter crash

Relatives of four passengers killed in a tour helicopter crash on Kaua'i last year filed a Circuit Court lawsuit yesterday against Bali Hai Helicopter Tours Inc.
The suit seeks an unspecified amount of money from the company described in the suit as the owner of the helicopter.
The four passengers were on a sightseeing tour when they were killed in the Sept. 24 crash. The four were Willy Braun and Heike Braun, a couple from Germany, Tamara Zytkowski of Ohio and Thomas Huemmer of Ohio.
Also killed was the Bali Hai Helicopter Tours pilot Shankar Tummala.
Bali Hai officials yesterday could not be reached for comment.
Farmers staging grand opening
There will be more than two dozen vendors offering farm products grown exclusively in Hawai'i at the grand opening of the Mililani Saturday Farmers' Market at Mililani High School's parking lot from 2 to 4 p.m.
The weekly market is sponsored by the Hawai'i Farm Bureau Federation and Mililani High School.
Roy's Ko Olina Restaurant executive chef Mike Leslie will be preparing a special bento for sale at the opening, with the Mililani High School jazz ensemble and guitarist Derek Nakamoto providing musical entertainment.
The Hawai'i Farm Bureau Federation also co-sponsors farmers markets Saturday mornings at Kapi'olani Community College and Thursday evenings at the Kailua Town Center parking garage.

Japanese event marks new year
The Maui Kumamoto Kenjin Kai will hold "Shinnen Enkai 2005," a Japanese new year luncheon celebration, from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Maui Beach Hotel.
There will be entertainment, door prizes and recognition of members who are 88 years old or older. This event is open to the public.
Tickets are $25 for adults; $13 for children ages 5 to 10. Tickets can be obtained at Credit Associates of Maui, 1817 Wells St. in Wailuku, or by calling the Makimotos at (808) 244-0747, or the Nakatas at (808) 878-3831.
$9.5 million given for airport screening The federal Transportation Security Administration is providing $9.5 million to expand baggage-screening operations at three Neighbor Island airports.
The agency will give $3.5 million to Kona International Airport, $3.5 million to Lihu'e Airport and $2.5 million to Hilo International Airport to acquire additional equipment to detect explosives.
Library programs set for kids, adults
Kahuku Public & School Library will host free programs for youth and adults this month in the library's Conference Room beginning with a St. Patrick's Day After-School Craft program at 2:15 p.m. March 16. Children of all ages will make a shamrock mouse magnet during this one-hour session. All supplies will be provided.
Spring Break for Adults will feature "How to Use the Internet" at 10 a.m. March 21; "Hawaiian Genealogy" at 1 p.m. March 22; "Craft Time!" at 10 a.m. March 23; "Video Production Training with Olelo, Part I" at 1 p.m. March 23; "Update Your Living Will" at 10 a.m. March 24; and "Video Production Training with Olelo, Part II" at 1 p.m. March 24.

The Kahuku High School Class of 1995 is holding a barbeque plate lunch fund-raiser to offset the cost of a reunion. Pickup is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow on the school field next to the office on Kamehameha Highway. The $6 meal includes barbeque chicken, spareribs, rice, macaroni salad and dessert.
Kupuna ID cards offered at bank
Adults 65 years and older can get free kupuna ID cards at First Hawaiian Bank's Pearlridge branch, 98-1071 Moanalua Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The state Department of Attorney General and Honolulu police, sponsors of the kupuna ID project, encourage all elderly adults to obtain a kupuna identification card that features their photo, name and emergency contact information.

The Windward Ahupua'a Alliance will be collecting donated empty beverage containers from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday at the triangle median opposite the Model Airplane Field on Kapa'a Quarry Road in Kailua and from noon to 1 p.m. March 20 at the Windward Community College lower parking lot in Kane'ohe. Look for an off-white Volkswagen Bug.

Lanikai author to discuss his novel
Local author Chip Hughes of Lanikai will discuss the research that went into writing his novel "Murder on Moloka'i," which is about the investigation of an environmental activist on the cliffs of Kalaupapa, at 6:30 p.m. March 22 at Kailua Public Library.
Hughes will also read from the book at this free event, sponsored by the Friends of Kailua Library.

Concert to fund 'ukulele for kids
The 'Ukes for Kids Concert, a benefit to raise money to buy 'ukuleles for children, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at McKinley High School, Hirata Hall.
The concert will feature KoAloha Ukulele players Britni Paiva, Herb Ohta Jr. and Walt Keale.
The group hopes to raise enough money buy 100 'ukulele for students across the state. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. For information, call 440-4646.
