Nalani Scharsch gets poetry award

Nalani Scharsch of Honolulu is the recipient of the James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry at Hawai'i Pacific University. Her poems, "Night Dive" and "Wana," will be published in HPU's literary magazine, Hawaii Pacific Review, scheduled for release this summer.



School librarians honor Nagasako

The Hawaii Association of School Librarians annually honors a school administrator who has made a significant contribution toward furthering the role of the library and its development in elementary and/or secondary education.

This year's selection was Alvin Nagasako of Kapolei High School. He has been chosen because he is a strong leader and constant source of support, with strong relationships within the school and with the public.



MW Group Ltd. recognizes efforts

MW Group Ltd. has recognized Ron Maganis, Kapua Nakamoto and members of the MW Group Maui Team for their outstanding community service and volunteer efforts toward MW Group's B.R.I.D.G.E. Program.

B.R.I.D.G.E. encourages employee volunteerism by paying $20 an hour into participating employees' special accounts for up to 12 hours a year. Employees then donate half of their wages to the project or charity of their choosing.



Humanities group elects leaders

The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, has elected new members and officers for 2005.

They are: chair, Gail Ainsworth, research librarian emerita, Maui Community College; vice chair, Andrew Bushnell, historian, Kaua'i Community College; and secretary-treasurer, Gary Cordova, vice president for institutional advancement, Chaminade University of Honolulu.

Members appointed by Gov. Linda Lingle are: Carol Fox, deputy director, Honolulu Academy of Arts, and Hyung Kwon Cha, financial consultant and agent, Pyramid Insurance Center. Reappointed was Allan Landon, president and CEO, Bank of Hawai'i.

Newly elected board members are: Lea Albert, Windward O'ahu superintendent, state Department of Education; Dean Alegado, chair, University of Hawai'i ethnic studies department; Puanani Burgess, president, Pu'a Foundation; and Sherlyn Franklin Goo, executive director, Institute of Native Pacific Education and Culture.
