Takata 2nd in New York tournament

Taylor Takata, a 2000 Iolani School graduate from Wahiawa, finished second in the 66kg (145 pounds) division of the New York Open Judo Championships last Sunday.

The event, a C level point tournament for men, showcased 163 of "some of the best judo players in the world," said tournament director Dr. Mel Appelbaum.

Takata lost to Justin Flores of the United States by a shido, or a very small penalty point, in the championship match.

Winners in each weight category were awarded a prize of $1,000.
