ILH gets second state berth
Advertiser Staff
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu will have two berths in this season's state baseball tournament, Hawai'i High School Athletic Association executive director Keith Amemiya said.
The ILH is picking up the berth lost by the Big Island Interscholastic Federation after Laupahoehoe dropped the sport earlier this week. The BIIF will relinquish one of its three berths.
Originally, the ILH lost its second berth when the Maui Interscholastic League added two programs this season: Hana and Kamehameha-Maui. Last year, the MIL and ILH had the same number of teams, so a play-in game between the leagues was played to secure the last berth. Punahou won that playoff last year and went on to win the state championship.
The league representation for the state tournament, scheduled for May 18 to 21, will be as follows: Five for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, two for the ILH, BIIF and MIL, and one for the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation.
Amemiya said the development was brought up in a meeting on another issue with all leagues present. He said there were no objections to the change.
State tournament representation is based on a number proportional to the number of teams in each league.
