Hawai'i baseball, volleyball teams win

Jose Castaneda's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning, helping Hawai'i to a 9-6 baseball victory today over Florida State at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbows completed a three-game sweep of the nationally ranked Seminoles (21-4).

Luis Avila led Hawai'i (12-8) going 3 for 4.

Relief pitcher Guy McDowell (2-0) gave up one hit and struck out two in 1° innings for the win.

Brian Schultz (0-1) took the loss for the Seminoles.

UH's Darrell Fisherbaugh earned his first save, pitching three hitless innings with two strikeouts.

The Seminoles arrived in Hawai'i ranked as high as third by Collegiate Baseball and as low as 17th by Baseball America.

In men's volleyball, Pedro Azenha had 14 kills to lead Hawai'i in its sweep of Ball State tonight at Stan Sheriff Center.

Matt Bender added 12 kills and Jose Delgado had 10 for the Warriors (13-4) who defeated the Cardinals (10-9), 23-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-25.

Brian Beckwith contributed 46 assists.

Ball State (Muncie, Ind.) was led by Nick Meyer with 15 kills. Evan Berg added 14 kills. Dave Carlson had 47 assists.
