Two UH men will swim at NCAAs

The University of Hawai'i's Chad Thomsen and Thomas Winkler will compete at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 24 to 26 at Minneapolis.

Thomsen made the cut in the 100 breaststroke (54.23 seconds) and 200 breaststroke (1:59.30), while Winkler qualified in the 50 freestyle (20.31), 100 backstroke (48.12 seconds) and 200 backstroke (1:45.17).

The Rainbow Warriors finished their dual meet season in February with a 10-1-1 record.

Two weeks ago, they placed second at the National Independent Conference Championships at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.



GOLF

Three-way tie atop amateur stroke-play

Bryan Edwards, Matt Kodama and Alvin Okada Jr. each shot 75s for the second consecutive day to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke-Play Championship yesterday at Pearl Country Club.

A stroke back at 151 are Tadd Fujikawa and Gary Kong, who shot 73s yesterday.

First-round leader Jacob Low shot an 80 yesterday and is at 152.

The third round starts today at 11:19 a.m.



WATER POLO

Three UH women to play in world tourney

University of Hawai'i women's water polo players Monika Kruszona, Iefke Van Belkum and Meike De Nooy are playing well for their respective countries at the Women's World Championships Qualification Tournament in Madrid, Spain.

Kruszona, from Krefeld, Germany, is a freshman on the 2005 UH water polo squad. She is one of the youngest players on the German team, but scored three goals in an 8-2 win over the Czech Republic for the fourth and final European berth in the 2005 World Championships in Montreal.

Kruszona leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and is second in the country with 32 goals.

Van Belkum, from Leiden, The Netherlands, is also a freshman on the UH team. She scored the winning goal as The Netherlands knocked off Spain, 9-8, to earn a berth in the world championships.

De Nooy, from Renkum, The Netherlands, is a sophomore at UH and has been in goal for The Netherlands during the tournament.

Hawai'i is idle this week but returns to action March 17 in an MPSF home match against Arizona State at 4:30 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
