UH shortstop Spiers is WAC Player of the Week

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i shortstop Joe Spiers today was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

The freshman from Moreno Valley, Calif., batted 7-for-12 in a three-game sweep of nationally ranked Florida State last weekend.

He also had seven runs and seven stolen bases in the series.

It is Spiers' first career WAC honors and the first for a Hawai'i player this year.

UH plays Winthrop tomorrow and Wednesday, and Louisiana Tech Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Louisiana Tech's Ryan Rupert was named the WAC pitcher of the week. He struck out 13 hitters in a three-hit complete game shutout on Friday.
