ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Cleaning off flower muck

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Get your glass vases ready for all those spring bouquets that certain someone is going to give you (hint, hint).

According to "Consumer Reports: How to Clean Practically Anything": If the vase is stained or has sediment at the bottom, "mix equal parts vinegar and warm water, add a few drops of mild detergent, pour the solution into the vase and let stand overnight. Brush out the sediment with a bottle brush. Or add crushed eggshells and shake until the sediment loosens. ... (or) pour water into the vase and add a denture-cleaning tablet, following the instructions for soaking on the package."

'Robots' debuts with $36.5 million

"Robots" earned about $36.5 million at the box office, doubling another family film, "The Pacifier," which dropped from the previous weekend to No. 2 with $18.1 million, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations.

"Get Shorty" sequel "Be Cool" dropped 56 percent from last weekend with only $10 million for third place, while the Bruce Willis action flick "Hostage" pulled $9.8 million in its feeble debut in fourth position. "Million Dollar Baby" is still bringing in the millions in its 13th week out at No. 6, thanks to its recent Oscar wins, as is Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator," which is hanging in at No. 11.

FINAL WORD

Legendary anchor Walter Cronkite | on Bob Schieffer, Dan Rather's replacement at CBS.

"Although Dan did a fine job, I would have liked to have seen (Schieffer) there a long time ago. He would have given the others a real run for their money."
