Tonight's Must-See

"House," 8, Fox. Here's another reminder that this is one of TV's great shows. At the core is Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), grumpy and guarded and brilliant. Tonight, he collides with two powerful CEOs. One is a patient, played by Sarah Clarke (she's the one who killed Jack's wife on "24"). A picture of perfection, she suddenly crumbles. One scene with House ripples with quiet emotion. The other is the hospital's new board chairman played by Chi McBride of "Boston Public." He doesn't really meet House until the end of this hour, but he'll be back for four more episodes. He adds new depth to a smart show.

Of Note

"American Idol," 7, Fox. Now that it has its 12 finalists the show settles into its pattern: The singers perform on Tuesdays with one eliminated on Wednesdays.

"Will & Grace," 7 and 7:30, NBC. The first rerun has Jack as Janet Jackson's back-up dancer. The second has family troubles: Hallee Hirsh (Greene's troubled daughter on "ER") plays Karen's stepdaughter; Blythe Danner plays Will's mom, who would fume if she knew Grace broke a figurine.

"Cold Turkey" season-opener, 9, Pax TV. The start of the second season is a big improvement over the first. Crisply photographed it takes contestants to the Grand Canyon for action games. Not until the end of the hour do they learn this is a reality show aimed at getting them to stop smoking.
