Wind advisory in effect

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service yesterday issued a wind advisory for the state, predicting winds of 20 to 30 mph today with gusts of up to 50 mph.

Winds were expected to subside to 10 to 20 mph by tonight.

Residents of north- and west-facing shores were advised that the strong west-northwest winds, combined with high surf, could produce significant wave run-up on beaches.

A high surf advisory was in effect through tonight, with a forecast of 17- to 20-foot surf on north shores and 8 to 14 feet on west shores.

The high winds are being generated by a low pressure system north of the Islands. A high wind warning, more severe than an advisory, was issued for the summits of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Haleakala. Winds at Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa were predicted to be 55 to 75 mph, with gusts near 100 mph. Haleakala may get winds of 35 to 50 mph with gusts up to 70 mph.

Low temperatures continued in the 60s for most of the state yesterday, with Lihu'e Airport the coolest spot at 55 degrees.
