Driver in fatal crash released

Police have released a 30-year-old Hau'ula man who they said was driving a car Saturday night that crashed near Pounders beach, killing one of his passengers.

Police said speed and alcohol were factors. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, negligent homicide, harassment of a police officer and failing to render aid.

Killed in the crash was 23-year-old Patrick "Liki" Ikakoula, of La'ie.

Ikakoula was the front-seat passenger in a black 1997 Honda Civic that was traveling Kahuku-bound on Kamehameha Highway when the driver lost control and crashed four-tenths of a mile south of Pokelo Place about 11 p.m. He was thrown from the car and hit a tree, police said.
