Frazier a finalist at Colorado

The name of University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier has been mentioned in connection with a second job opening this month, according to a published report.

HERMAN FRAZIER

The Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera yesterday, under the headline "Hawaii A.D. Emerges as CU Candidate," reported Frazier "is apparently on the short list of finalists" for the vacant athletic director job at Colorado.

Two weeks ago, Frazier's name surfaced in the Arizona Republic, prominently mentioned in connection with the upcoming opening at his alma mater, Arizona State.

Frazier, who has been athletic director at UH since Aug. 1, 2002, said in a prepared statement: "I have not been contacted by anyone regarding the vacancies at Arizona State and Colorado. It should not be surprising that my name has been mentioned in the media in reference to the vacancies at these two institutions. I spent 23 years at Arizona State and it is logical for my name to pop up there.

"As far as the Colorado job is concerned, the Olympic Training Center is located in Colorado Springs, near Boulder, so my experience and ties with the USOC may have something to do with that. However, there is a clear distinction between speculation and fact. And the fact is, I am the athletics director at the University of Hawai'i and I am not actively pursuing any other job openings."

CU has been in the market for an athletic director since Dick Tharp resigned in November following a recruiting scandal that has seen the school's president and chancellor also resign. Jack Lengyl was appointed interim AD in December and is expected to serve until a replacement is named. A CU representative said that should happen sometime between April 15 and May 15.

Arizona State has said it hopes to name a replacement for Gene Smith, who is leaving for Ohio State, by Smith's April 8 departure.
