DeSoto, Uemura win surf events

Duane DeSoto won the men's open division and Moanakea Uemura took the women's open title of the 29th annual Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Classic this past weekend at Makaha Beach.

DeSoto tallied 103 points and Uemura scored 71.

DeSoto also placed second in the Beach Boy and third in the Paipo events.

Buzzy Kerbox and Bonga Perkins won the team surfing competition with a score of 13.5.

Brian Keaulana, the son of event founder Buffalo Keaulana, teamed with Kathy Terada to take the tandem surfing event with a score of 18.5.



GOLF

Hilo's Mason prevails

Hawai'i-Hilo's Nick Mason shot a final-round 4-under-par 67 to win medallist honors at the 55th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Golf Championships, which was held March 7 and 8 in Del Mar, Calif.

Mason's three-round total of 2-under 211 gave him a four-stroke victory over Brian Hostetler (Southwestern Oklahoma State), Adam Lewis (Sonoma State) and Greg Lopez (Cal State San Bernardino).

Hilo finished in a tie for second with Chico State at 885 in the 15-team field. Cal State Bakersfield won with 865.



BASEBALL

HPU sweeps Lander

Bryan Daguio singled in Alika Kuraoka from third with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as Hawai'i Pacific beat Lander (S.C.), 9-8, in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Aloha Stadium.

The Sea Warriors (12-8) scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 8.

Greg Benoit doubled, tripled and drove in three runs for HPU.

In the first game, Jay Baptista batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Grandon Costa doubled, tripled and drove in two runs as the Sea Warriors beat Lander, 10-7.



SOFTBALL

BYU-Hawai'i splits

Mandy Kirkham batted 3 for 3 and scored twice as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Georgia College and State, 4-1, yesterday to salvage a split of a doubleheader at BYUH field.

Jenna Kubesch pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts as Georgia College and State won the opener, 3-1.

BYUH is 5-13, Georgia College and State 11-7.
