Girl injured in tree fall remains critical

A 12-year-old Manoa girl who was severely injured early yesterday morning when a huge tree snapped and fell through the roof of her family's home on Beckwith Street remains in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center, family attorney Richard Fried said this morning.

Fried said the condition of Julia Engle, who is being treated for head and chest injuries, "is essentially unchanged from yesterday."

"She is still in critical condition, not responsive and her prognosis remains guarded," Fried said in a statement issued about 11:15 a.m. today.

The nearly 100-year-old, 80-foot-high tree snapped at the base, sending the upper portion of the tree crashing into the bedroom where the girl was sleeping. The tree was located across the street from the girl's home.

She was taken to Queen's in very critical condition, emergency workers said.
