Habitat granted building permits

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — An expedited permitting process has granted Habitat for Humanity the building permits for an 18-unit affordable housing project to be completed this year in 'Ele'ele.

Habitat plans to complete seven units by summer and the remaining 11 units by the end of the year, said Bernard Carvalho, director of the county Offices of Community Assistance.

The permitting process, which involved Habitat's designers and engineers meeting with county building officials to work out details quickly, was established to promote low-cost housing projects. It took about a month from an initial meeting to final plan approval.

Carvalho said he expects a similar process to be used for the Self-Help Housing Corp.'s proposed 41-unit project at Puhi. The first 14 of those homes are expected to be started in May.
