Tanoue hits All-America target

 •  Baseball proves best for Kometani
 •  5 to play in basketball postseason

Nevada senior Ryan Tanoue closed out his intercollegiate career by earning two more All-America honors in air riflery.

Tanoue, a 2001 Saint Louis graduate, helped Nevada place seventh at the NCAA Rifle Championships hosted by Nevada at the USA Shooting Olympic Training Site on Saturday.

Tanoue, who won the 2002 NCAA air rifle individual title, shot 687.1 for fifth place Saturday to earn his fourth straight All-America honor in air riflery. He also received All-America status in small bore for the second year in a row.

Wrestling

• Cornell senior Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Liliha) is the top seed at 133 pounds for the 75th NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo., beginning tomorrow.

His first match will be against Derek Moore of UC Davis.

Lee, the 2003 national champion at 125 pounds, will attempt to become the first wrestler in Ivy League history to become a four-time All-American. He is 13-4 all-time in the NCAA tournament.

Iowa State junior Grant Nakamura (Baldwin '01) is not seeded at 125. He wrestles Jeremy Mendoza of Arizona State in the opening round. Nakamura earned a wild-card berth with a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. He will wrestle in his third straight NCAA Championships.

Women's Basketball

• College of the Siskiyous (Weed, Calif.) freshman guard Meagan Miyasaka (McKinley '04 of Honolulu) made the all-Golden Valley Conference team, after finishing third in the state with 6.3 assists per game. She also averaged 6 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Siskiyous freshman center Kaiena Huihui (Kalaheo '04 of Honolulu) was an honorable-mention pick. She averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds in conference play.

Baseball

• Hartnell College (Salinas, Calif.) sophomore pitcher Christopher Balatico (Mililani '03) struck out 16 in a 12-1 win over San Jose City College on March 8.

Balatico had a no-hitter until giving up a solo home run with two outs in the eighth inning. He was removed with one out in the ninth.

He also had four hits, with four runs, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Freshman catcher Jowen Murray-Thornton (Saint Louis '04) had two hits and four RBIs and freshman third baseman Jake Oketani (Kaua'i) hit a three-run homer in the fifth.

• New Mexico freshman second baseman/centerfielder Chad Itokazu (Pearl City) dislocated and fractured his left ankle during practice last Wednesday and will be out for the remainder of the season, according to his mother, Lani Itokazu.

• Corcordia (Portland, Ore.) freshman Derek Shigano (Roosevelt, from Pearl City) is hitting .286 and has started seven of the 10 games he has played in, with six hits, seven runs, and three RBIs.

Men's Golf

• Pacific Lutheran junior Kurt Inouye (Kaua'i of Kapa'a) won medalist honors at the Willamette Invitational with a 72-75—147 on Monday at the Creekside Country Club in Oregon.

Swimming

• Three Hawai'i swimmers at Lindenwood (St. Charles, Mo.) had a good showing at the NAIA Championships March 2 to 5.

Sophomore Erin Nakamoto (Kalani '03) placed seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:01.63).

Freshman Jon Lau (Iolani '04) finished sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:56.46) and 11th in the 100 butterfly (52.34).

Freshman Chris Ricketts (Mid-Pacific '04) placed 12th in the 100 freestyle (48.37).

They were also successful at the Liberal Arts Championships, Feb. 17 to 19.

Nakamoto placed second in the 50 freestyle (25.43), third in the 100 freestyle (56.05), and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.17).

Lau finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.56), third in the 100 butterfly (53.27), and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:04.39).

Ricketts came in second in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.28), and third in the 50 freestyle (21.97) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.67).

• Tulane sophomore Leslie Christian (Leilehua '03 of Wahiawa) placed third in the 1,650 freestyle (17:02.89) at the Conference USA Championships Feb. 26.

• Occidental junior Andrew Sutton (Punahou '01 of Wai'alae Iki) earned all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognition for finishing in the top three in two relay events. His 800-yard freestyle relay team placed second (7:11.44) and his 400 medley relay finished third (3:34.48).

Softball

• Menlo freshman outfielder Layla Lariosa (University High of 'Ewa Beach) had two hits and two RBIs in an 11-4 win over Mayville State (N.D.) on Saturday.

Men's Volleyball

• Pacific (Calif.) senior opposite hitter Brian Zodrow (Saint Louis '01) had a team-high 20 kills in a 3-1 win over No. 6 Brigham Young on Saturday. Zodrow also had two aces and three blocks.

• Princeton senior middle hitter Sean Vitousek (Hawai'i Prep '01 of Kamuela) had a team-high 19 kills and added seven blocks in a 3-2 upset of No. 13 George Mason on March 6.

Men's Basketball

• Webster (St. Louis, Mo.) senior center Kaniela Aiona (Honoka'a '01 of Waimea) was named to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team.

He averaged 13.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Junior forward Christian Basilio (Hilo '02) started all 27 games, and averaged 7.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Signing

• Kapolei High School senior April Due has signed with the women's soccer team at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

Due, a 5-foot-6 goalkeeper, is an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division second-team all-star, and the defending state champion in judo at 136 pounds.

5 to play in basketball postseason

Five women's basketball players from Hawai'i will be competing in the postseason.

UC Santa Barbara senior forward Brandy Richardson (Kalaheo '01 of 'Aiea), Alcorn State freshman center LaToya Wily (Kahuku '04) and Eastern Kentucky freshman forward Nancy Hoist (Konawaena '04 of Captain Cook, Hawai'i) are all playing in the NCAA Tournament, which begins Saturday.

Hoist's teammate, sophomore center Fatai Hala'api'api (Lahainaluna '02 of Lahaina) is out for the season with a left knee injury.

Should UC Santa Barbara and Eastern Kentucky win their first-round games Saturday, they will meet in the second round Monday.

Gonzaga sophomore point guard Rachel Kane (Punahou '03 of Kane'ohe) and Fresno State senior forward Aritta Lane ('Aiea '01) are playing in the Women's National Invitation Tournament, which begins today.
