Nevada beats UH softball team, 3-1

Jordan McPherson pitched a five-hitter as Nevada defeated Hawai'i, 3-1, last night in the final game of a Western Athletic Conference softball series at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Jiliane Hartfiel had two hits and Candice Rainwater drove in two runs for the Wolf Pack (10-14 overall, 2-1 WAC).
Kaulana Gould had two hits and scored in the fourth inning for the Rainbow Wahine (14-13, 1-2), who left the bases loaded after closing to 3-1.
Rainwater's sacrifice fly in the first made it 1-0 and her RBI single in the third made it 2-0. Brittany Lorenzen's RBI single in the fourth gave Nevada a 3-0 lead.
Two of the Wolf Pack runs were unearned as UH committed five errors.
HPU sweeps
Brandi Peiler pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts as Hawai'i Pacific beat Minnesota-Morris, 8-0, yesterday to complete a sweep at Sea Warrior Field.
Peiler also hit two doubles and drove in a run as the Sea Warriors improved to 14-6 while Minnesota-Morris fell to 1-5.
HPU won the first game, 17-1, behind the two-hit, six-strikeout pitching of Dayna Berry and Kellie Nishikida's five RBIs.
UH's Gammie leads
University of Hawai'i sophomore Dale Gammie shot two rounds of 7-over-par 79 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead in the Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kane'ohe Klipper course.
Washington State's Kim Welch and Jay Lee Longbottom share second at 159.
The Cougars also lead the nine-team field with a 649 total. The Rainbow Wahine are second at 665.
The final round will begin today at 7:30 a.m.
Gauthier sets mark
University of Hawai'i sophomore Patricia Gauthier set a school record in the pole vault Saturday in an all-comer's meet at Cooke Field.
Gauthier cleared 3.66 meters (12 feet) to eclipse the record of 3.50 meters she set earlier this year. It also bettered the previous Cooke Field record of 3.57 meters by UCLA's Chelsea Johnson.
Freshman Sabrina Reeve ran the 3,000 meters in 9 minutes, 54.51 seconds to better the previous Cooke Field record of 9:59.34 held by former Rainbow Wahine Victoria Chang.
Also, junior Tasha Moore leaped 5.53 meters in the long jump, freshman Meghan Weaver heaved the shot 13.60 meters and junior Novelle Murray threw the discus 49.36 meters. All were season bests for the team.
State meet Saturday
The Hawai'i Women's State Gymnastics Championships is Saturday at 'Aiea Recreation Center gym.
The meet, with sessions at noon and 4 p.m., will be hosted by the Hawaiian Island Twisters.
