Wie opens with 73 at Safeway International

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Michelle Wie recovered from a bogey and a double-bogey in her first nine holes to finish at 1-over-par 73 in the first round of the LPGA's Safeway International at Superstition Mountain, Ariz.

The early clubhouse leaders were Siew-Ai Lim of Malaysia and Lorena Ochoa of Mexico at 7-under 65. Annika Sorenstam, who won the MasterCard Classic earlier this month, was at 6-under. Several golfers had yet to complete their rounds.

Wie, a 15-year-old Punahou School student, started on the back nine and bogeyed the par-3 12th hole and double-bogeyed the par-5 18th hole to make the turn at 3-over 39.

She went to 4 over with a bogey on the par-4 third hole before making birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 7.

The Safeway International is Wie's second LPGA tournament of the year. She finished second at the SBS Open at Turtle Bay last month.
