STORK REPORT: Comedian Kaleo Pilanca had an incredibly productive weekend. After his sold-out "Comedy Kanikapila" Saturday night at the Hawaiian Hut, Pilanca got the best reward ever: the birth of twins on Sunday. Hazel Nahehe Pilanca weighed 5 pounds, 9 ounces, at 18y´ inches; Kainalu McKenzie Pilanca, already nicknamed Little Mac, weighed 5 pounds, 3 ounces, 18 inches.
His fiancee, Renee Feary, attended the show; after breaking down sets, Pilanca went for breakfast at Likelike Drive In, returning with Feary to their Ala Moana Hotel room at about 4 a.m. When her contractions started at 7 a.m., the couple made their way to Kapi'olani hospital, where the twins arrived between 6 and 7 p.m. "Thank goodness they don't look like me," said Pilanca, who plans a 2006 wedding.
The bundles of joy surely will be fodder for fun when Pilanca appears in "Make Me Laugh Westside," from 7:30 p.m. April 1 (no fooling!) at Dot's in Wahiawa, with Mel Cabang, Da Hawaiian Guy from Moloka'i, Stan Egi, Cathy Tanaka and Elroy aboard. Tickets are $15 in advance, at Dot's (622-4115), Jelly's 'Aiea, Samurai Kapolei and Rainbow Books & Music University Avenue; or $20 at the door.
Also, Pilanca will host the grand opening of Soul Café, from 8:30 p.m. March 26 at the Esprit of the Sheraton Waikiki hotel. ...
ALOHA LIVES: There's no substitute for experience, as The Brothers Cazimero showed at their Hana Hou! concert Friday night at the Hawai'i Theatre. Clearly, Robert and Roland's recent Grammy nomination, for "Some Call It Aloha ... Don't Tell," had tremendous effect on the outburst of aloha and mele. Their voices were more robust than ever; there were a dozen gents from Robert's Halau Na Kamalei, and five hula wahine from The Royal Dance Company who filled the stage with splendor for the ears, for the eyes, for the soul.
Burton White, Hawai'i Theatre manager, made his singing and uke-strumming debut, performing "Makapu'u Pali" with genuine charm. Glen Smith of Ho'okena played ki ho'alu (with Roland on slack-key guitar and Robert on fiddle bass), in a classic "unplugged" sequence, showcasing unamplified brilliance a la "Ka Himeni Ana" on "Mahalo Nui," "Maori Brown Eyes" and "Keawaiki." And falsetto singer Keao Costa, whose songs included "Hawaiian Superman," demonstrated that he excels apart from his Na Palapalai group, too. Jon de Mello's simple but effective set three triangular panels resembling sails provided a palette of changing colors. The whole shebang can be gracefully expanded to fill the Waikiki Shell come May Day, when The Caz will celebrate their expansive producing and performing skills. Tickets are $25 (reserved) and $15 (lawn), on sale April 15. ...
WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Vilsoni "Vili" Hereniko, writer-director of "The Land Has Eyes," introduced his film at all 15 screenings last weekend (and did Q&As) when it made its commercial-run debut Friday at the Dole Signature Theatres. "I stayed for three screenings, then took a break," said his wife, Jeannette Paulson Hereniko. "Land" has been held over. ...
Josh Holloway, the "Lost" hunk, reveals wedding details in the current People magazine. Tied the knot Oct. 1 on Kaua'i with Yessica, a retail director of a Los Angeles boutique. The elopement took place a few days after ABC picked up the hot show for a full season. "Lost" loyalists should watch for a steamy sequence with hottie Evangeline Lilly on the Nov. 10 episode part of the November ratings sweep. ... Comedian Frank DeLima brings laughter to seniors today, joining Mayor Mufi Hannemann to mark "March for Meals Month So No Senior Goes Hungry." A march around Honolulu Hale starts at 11:30 a.m., culminating in a show at the Memorial Mission Auditorium next to City Hall. ... Jasmine Trias is hardly idle. Still working on her first CD on the Mainland, she'll hawk her "Flying Home" single twice, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Waipi'o Pizza Hut/Taco Bell, and from 2 to 3 p.m. at the McCully Taco Bell. Trias was the closing performer at the weekend Hawai'i Music Expo at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall, doing two songs (one to tracks, the other a cappella), and signing autographs. ... Manoa Valley Theatre sold a record 250 "Cabaret" tickets on Monday a one-day record, according to producing director Dwight Martin, who's all smiles. A third holdover is likely, so keep dialing (988-6131). ... And that's Show Biz. ...
