Electric cars to race Saturday

Teams from 27 high schools statewide will jump into student-built and -designed electric vehicles for Saturday's 10th annual Hawaiian Electric Electron Marathon.
Race day activities will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Ford Island. The cars are built from a kit of basic parts provided by Hawaiian Electric Co.
Teams are judged on vehicle performance, construction and safety, their documentation and an oral presentation on the construction process.
The race is free and open to the public. For information on security procedures regarding access to Ford Island go to www.heco.com and find Electron Marathon listed under the Generation e-link at the top of the home page, or call 543-7511.
The Car and Truck Renting and Leasing AssociationiHawai'i is accepting applications for its scholarship program through April 12.
The $16,000 in scholarships will go to students pursuing travel industry management or business-related careers. Two new scholarships will be awarded and six renewed.

Student performers are being sought for a youth concert at Mamiya Theater at Saint Louis High School on May 1.
Proceeds will benefit the Children's Alliance of Hawai'i, a nonprofit that helps abused youngsters. Student musicians and dancers are encouraged to call the organizers at 778-6470 or e-mail zkim07@punahou.edu. Punahou sophomores River Kim and Tierney Morikawa co-founded Malama Jam last year after volunteering at the Institute for Human Services. The concert drew dozens of public and private school performers and raised $15,000 for IHS.
