HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Woman killed in crash, baby dies

Advertiser Staff

A Big Island traffic accident yesterday took the life of a 56-year-old woman and resulted in the loss of another woman's unborn child.

The woman was killed in a two-car collision at Kea'au-Pahoa Road and Kaloli Drive in Puna. Police identified her as Lucille Nacionales of a Kea'au address.

Officers said Nacionales was driving a 2000 Toyota sedan east on Route 130 when she tried to make a left turn onto Kaloli Drive and collided with a 1992 black Toyota sedan traveling west on the highway at about 3 p.m.

Nacionales died at Hilo Medical Center at 5:46 p.m.

The driver of the other car, a pregnant 23-year-old woman, also was taken to the hospital, where medical personnel induced labor, but couldn't save her baby. The woman remains in the hospital in satisfactory condition. Her 6-year-old son was treated for minor injuries and released.

Ferry to get new terminal, parking

KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka'i — The state has released $100,000 to finance design costs for commuter ferry system improvements at Kaunakakai Harbor.

The project will provide a new terminal for the Moloka'i-to-Maui ferry, including restrooms, office space, parking, fencing and utilities.

The design and construction cost is $3.4 million, with 80 percent covered by federal funds. The state's portion will come out of the harbors special fund. The design stage will be completed by the end of the year, with construction scheduled for completion in the fall of 2006.

Co-op to reward energy efficiency

PUHI, Kaua'i — The Kaua'i Island Utility Co-op will pay members $50 rebates for replacing certain older appliances with new ones that are more energy-efficient.

The utility will pay the rebates on refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers and dishwashers bought after March 14, 2005.

The program is aimed at residential replacement appliances and does not apply to new construction or commercial accounts.

"Older appliances use more energy. New appliances lower your electric bill, and using less energy is good for the environment," said Ray Mierta, the utility's energy services specialist.

All Kaua'i appliance dealers are participating in the program. On purchase, buyers will get a rebate application, which can be returned to KIUC with a copy of the sales receipt for the rebate.

The rebates are on a first-come, first-served basis. The utility said the program will run through the year, but that available funds are limited, and could run out sooner.

For more information call KIUC at 246-8284.
