• Four middle school students were the top individual scorers in the recently held Hawai'i MATHCOUNTS state competition.

The winners are Timothy Meyer and Dong-Yeop Shin, both of Kaimuki Middle School, Lianne Ho of Iolani and Kent Kobayashi of Punahou.

They will represent Hawai'i in the national competition in Detroit.

The perpetual team trophy went to the Punahou team of Allison Chen, Kobayashi, Nicolas Yamagata and Jessica Yoshimi.

• Dean Randy Hitz of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Education has been elected to serve a three-year term on the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education board of directors.

Hitz has 30 years of experience in the field of education with primary emphasis on early childhood and teacher education.

He has served as dean of the UH Manoa College of Education since May 1998.

• Maggie Cole has been appointed a trustee of Punahou School.

She is a managing partner in Sunnyside Farms, an organic farm in Washington. She serves on the boards of the Hawai'i Community Foundation and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center Museum of Women in the Arts.

She is the mother of four Punahou alumni.
