Kahuku tops Kaiser, 66-60

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku again looks like the girls basketball team to beat in the Eastern Division, but Kaiser almost did just that last night.

Kahuku prevailed on the road, 66-60, but only after trailing 30-28 at halftime and rallying from a 41-35 deficit midway through the third period. It was the regular season opener for both teams.

"Kaiser is a good team," Red Raiders coach Wendy Anae said. "I respect them a lot."

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Camilla Ah-Hoy and Artevia Wily tied the score at 41, then Tina Soliai sank two free throws at the end of the quarter to put Kahuku up, 53-51.

The Cougars closed to 55-54 on Kilioe Ali'ifua's three-point play with 5:08 remaining, but a 6-0 run by the Red Raiders gave them a 61-54 lead. After Nicole Lehner's layup cut it to 63-59 with two minutes left, Wily sealed it with three free throws in the final 22 seconds.

"I thought our girls played very well against a really good team," Kaiser coach Lisa Mann said. "Kahuku is still the team to beat in the OIA: they're so big, strong and athletic. But by playing the best right away, we're seeing how much we need to improve, so in that sense I'm glad we started the season with them."

The Red Raiders also are trying to find themselves after returning just five players from last year's state runner-up team. Two of the biggest losses were center Latoya Wily and point guard Karla Tailele, both of whom are now playing in college.

But junior guards Ah-Hoy (21 points) and Wily (17 points) showed last night they can pick up the slack from the outside and senior center Aisha Ale (10 points) is doing the job in the post.

"I think we're more balanced this year," Ah-Hoy said. "We can spread the responsibility around."

As for Kaiser, the Cougars are blossoming into a veteran contender after two years as a youthful dark horse. Senior center Ali'ifua (19 points) showed off several impressive post moves last night, and junior forward Sharde Pratt (17 points) scored often in transition.

But the added bonus is senior guard Lehner, who scored 16 points in her OIA debut after transferring from Sacred Hearts.

"She and (fellow guard) Jaime Nerona work very well together," Mann said.
