Two Isle boxers win at nationals

Shawn Murphy of 'Aiea and Christopher Downs of Schofield Barracks won their opening bouts of the U.S. Amateur Championships yesterday at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Murphy decisioned Aaron Banks, of Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, 25-13, in the 165-pound class.

Downs beat Valentino Jalamo, of Amarillo, Texas, at 178 pounds when the referee stopped the contest in the first round.



GOLF

Washington St. sweeps

Washington State swept individual and team honors of the Donnis Thompson Invitational golf tournament that concluded yesterday at the 5,829-yard, par-72 Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.

Cougar senior Kim Welch shot a final-round 76 to take medalist honors with a 19-over 235 three-round total. Teammate Jay Lee Longbottom shared second at 236 with San Francisco senior Joan Shimozaki, a 2001 Seabury Hall graduate from Kihei, Maui.

University of Hawai'i sophomore Dale Gammie, who had a one-stroke lead to start the day, shot a 10-over 82 to finish fourth at 240.

Washington State won the team title with a 112-over 976 total, followed by San Francisco (989) and UH (996). UH-Hilo placed eighth in the nine-team field at 1,068.



SOFTBALL

BYUH splits

Brooke Hilton's two-run homer sparked Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 7-4 victory over Wisconsin-Stout yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader at BYUH field.

Wisconsin-Stout rallied for four runs in the top of the 13 inning to win the second game, 7-5.

BYUH is 6-14, Wisconsin-Stout 1-3.

Hilton batted 2 for 4 and pitched the distance in the opener.

Hilton, Mandy Kirkham and Chynna Wilcox each three hits, and Echo Allred pitched seven shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out 12, in the Seasiders' loss in the second game.
