Victims found floating yesterday identified

Advertiser Staff

The city Department of the Medical Examiner has identified two people whose bodies were found floating about 2:55 p.m. yesterday in waters off Lahilahi Beach Park in Makaha.

The two were identified as Soledad Samortin, 54, and Stephen Y. Kumagai, 51.

Two boys who were surfing spotted the woman's body, brought it to shore and called police. After the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police officers asked that the police helicopter do a fly-over of the surrounding shoreline to see if the woman's belongings or a campsite could be located.

While looking the area over, the helicopter pilot spotted the man's body. It was brought to shore where he also was pronounced dead.

Police said there were no apparent signs of foul play.
