ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Deep 'Skin' secrets

Advertiser Staff

Everyone wants youthful skin, and quick fixes and flashy labels abound. Cutting through the hype, Dr. David J. Goldberg, a dermatologist and director of laser research at Mount Sinai (New York)) School of Medicine's department of dermatology, published "Secrets of Great Skin" (Innova, $12.95) that uses a natural and common-sense approach to beautiful skin.

The book discusses:

  • The most important factor in preventing premature aging.
  • Noninvasive techniques for looking younger now.
  • Skin-friendly nutrients and the foods that contain them.
  • How to evaluate cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens.

Get a little jungle flavor

The Rum Jungle is one of several signature cocktails at the new E&O Trading Co. Southeast Asian Grill at Ward Centre. But we found its potent mix of flavors and, well, potency so completely intoxicating on a recent visit, we begged general manager Keoni Craig to share the secret of its strength.

E&O mixes vanilla rum, gold rum, white creme de cacao and Kahlua, then chills the brew with split vanilla beans and pineapple for three days. The aged elixir is then poured when you order it, with a wickedly infused "pineapple bomb" slice from the three-day-old brew dropped in. It'll cost you $9, but you won't need another.

FINAL WORD

Bebe Neuwirth | referring to "Law & Order: Trial by Jury" co-star Jerry Orbach, who died in December of prostate cancer.

"It was unspeakably sad to lose Jerry. But one of the great examples that Jerry set was a Herculean work ethic. It was beyond being a trouper."
