Owens at speed clinic

Former University of Hawai'i receiver/punt returner Chad Owens, a 2004 All-America football player, will be the featured coach at this weekend's Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics at UH athletic facilities.
Owens, who is training for next week's Pro Day scouting combine in California, volunteered to interrupt his training to work with the campers. Owens had worked at the last series of clinics.
"It's a good feeling to see the smile on their faces when they see me," said Owens, who declined an appearance fee. "There's no better feeling for me. It's like when I see my son every day. I like working with kids. Anytime I have a chance to give back, I'm willing to do that."
Owens said he hopes to serve as inspiration to the campers. He joined UH as a non-scholarship player in August 2000.
"I want the kids to know good things can happen if you work hard," Owens said.
The clinics are tomorrow and Sunday, with sessions for ages 7-12 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and 13 and older from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Each session will focus on different techniques.
For a $10 fee per session, each camper will receive instruction in plyometrics and running techniques, as well as a Jamba Juice coupon.
Entrants must complete an application form 30 minutes before their session.
