Hawai'i diver wins national title

University of Hawai'i junior Qiong Jie Huang won the one-meter diving event yesterday at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship held at the Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

Huang scored 327 points to edge two-time NCAA champion Blythe Hartley of USC, who totalled 324.90 points.

Huang, of Wen Zhou, Republic of China, is only the second NCAA swimming and diving champion from Hawai'i since 1982.

With the title, she earned All-America status for the fourth time in two years.

The Rainbows didn't qualify any athletes for today's swimming finals.



BASKETBALL

UH-Hilo's Law named West Coach of Year

University of Hawai'i-Hilo basketball coach Jeff Law has been named the National Association of Basketball Coaches West District Coach of the Year.

Law, who just completed his seventh year with the Vulcans, led Hilo to the No. 8 ranking in the final NABC/NCAA Division II poll. The Vulcans began the year unranked.

Hilo finished 25-4 and won the Pacific West Conference title. The .862 winning percentage was the second-best in Vulcans' history.

Law was named PacWest Coach of the Year earlier.



WRESTLING

Cornell's Lee reaches quarters at 133 pounds

Cornell's Travis Lee defeated Virginia Tech's David Hoffman, 10-6, yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Men's Wrestling Tournament at St. Louis.

Lee, a Saint Louis School alum from Liliha, is the tournament's top seed at 133 pounds.

In the first round, Lee pinned Derek Moore of UC Davis at 1 minute, 51 seconds of the match.

In the second round, Lee used four takedowns to take an 8-3 lead after the first period.

Lee, a senior, was the national champion at 125 pounds in 2003 and took fifth at 133 in 2004.

Iowa State's Grant Nakamura, a Baldwin High alum, lost his second-round match yesterday, 3-2, to Joseph Dubuque of Indiana and moved to the consolation bracket in the 125-pound division.

Nakamura, a junior, defeated Jeremy Mendoza of Arizona State in the first round, 7-6.



SOFTBALL

BYU-Hawai'i sweeps Minnesota-Morris

Brooke Hilton pitched a one-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Minnesota-Morris, 8-0, in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at BYUH field in La'ie.

The Seasiders' Rebecca Orosz batted 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

In the second game, the Seasiders scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Minnesota-Morris (1-7), 2-1.

Katie Pagan allowed one unearned run in six innings for BYUH (8-14) and Hilton pitched one inning for the save.



HPU, Georgia College split doubleheader

Dayna Berry pitched a three-hitter, allowing an unearned run, as Hawai'i Pacific beat Georgia College and State, 4-1, in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at HPU Windward Field.

In the second game, Brook Harrison pitched a five-hitter as Georgia College and State (14-8) scored in the top of the eighth inning to beat HPU, 1-0.



BOXING

Schofield's Downs reaches semifinal

Christopher Downs of Schofield Barracks won a 3-0 decision over De'Rae Crane of Davenport, Iowa, in the quarterfinals of the 178-pound division at the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships yesterday at Colorado Springs, Colo.

In the quarterfinals of the 165-pound division, Shawn Murphy of 'Aiea lost to Johnathan Nelson of Little Rock, Ark., when the referee stopped the contest in the third round.



WATER POLO

Rainbow Wahine ease past Sun Devils, 11-6

Beth Novick and Iefke Van Belkum scored three goals apiece as Hawai'i beat Arizona State, 11-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match yesterday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Meike De Nooy had nine saves for Hawai'i (8-6, 3-2 MPSF).

Ashley Bower led the Sun Devils (5-11, 1-4 MPSF) with two goals.
