Cornell's Lee reaches NCAA wrestling final

Cornell senior Travis Lee pinned Wisconsin's Tom Clum at 2 minutes, 55 seconds of the first period yesterday to advance to the final of the 133-pound division of the NCAA Division I men's wrestling championships at St. Louis.
Earlier yesterday, Lee defeated Boise State's Scott Jorgensen, 9-3, to advance to the semifinals.
Lee will be going after his second NCAA title.
In 2003, he won the 125-pound division as a sophomore before moving to 133. He was fifth at the NCAAs last year. Lee, the Ivy League Wrestler of the Year, is 36-1 this season and 17-4 at NCAA tournaments.
Iowa State's Grant Nakamura lost to Buffalo's Mark McKnight, 8-5, in the consolation bracket and was eliminated from the tournament. Nakamura, a junior, is a Baldwin High alum.
Hawai'i's Gibbon gains U.S. Amateur final
Honolulu's Anna Gibbon advanced to the finals of the women's 187-pound division last night at the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.
Gibbon beat Taniqueka Harvey, of Clinton, Md., when the referee stopped the contest in the second round.
Gibbon will meet Tameka Stephens, of Charlotte, N.C., in tonight's final. Stephens decisioned New York's Tanzee Daniel, 8-7, in the other semifinal.
Two other boxers from Hawai'i lost in last night's semifinals.
Colleen Loo of Mililani lost a 3-0 decision to San Diego's Adri Harding in the women's 101-pound division, while Christopher Downs of Schofield Barracks was decisioned by San Jose's Brandon Gonzalez (21-12) in the men's 178-pound division.
Harding will take on Chantel Cordova, of Pueblo West, Colo., in tonight's final. Gonzalez faces William Rosinksy of New York.
UH's Huang takes 4th in 3-meter springboard
University of Hawai'i diver QiongJie Huang finished fourth yesterday in 3-meter springboard diving, a day after she won a national title at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship at West Lafayette, Ind.
Huang, a native of Wen Zhou, China, scored 551.84 points. USC's Blythe Hartley won with 586.15 points. UH's Rui Wang finished sixth with 531.15. The top eight earned All-America honors. It was Huang's fifth in two years; Wang earned her first.
Four UH swimmers swam in preliminaries yesterday, but none advanced to the finals. UH's 800 freestyle relay team finished 16th in the finals.
On Thursday, Huang won the 1-meter diving championship and became the second NCAA swimming and diving champion from UH since 1982. Former Rainbow Wahine Jeanne Childs won the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke at the 1983 NCAA Championships at Nebraska.
UH's Tabion blanks Eastern Illinois, 6-0
Shannon Tabion tossed a four-hitter, leading the University of Hawai'i to a 6-0 victory over Eastern Illinois in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational last night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Denise Dahlberg went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, and Jennifer Hackett drove in two runs for the Rainbow Wahine, who pounded out 10 hits.
In other games yesterday, San Diego beat Eastern Illinois, 6-3; Loyola Marymount defeated Winthrop, 7-3; Tokyo edged Marymount, 3-2, and Miami beat Winthrop, 2-1, Tokyo, 5-2.

Hawai'i Pacific sweeps Wisconsin-Stout
Brandi Peiler pitched a four-hitter and Dayna Berry hit a three-run homer helping Hawai'i Pacific defeat Wisconsin-Stout, 11-0, to complete a doubleheader sweep yesterday at HPU Windward Field.
Berry scattered four hits and Jamie Reyes and Nicole Kalakau each drove in two runs to lead the Sea Warriors to a 7-1 victory in the first game.
Berry struck out four and walked one to improve to 4-1.
In the second game, Reyes went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Kellie Nishikida had two hits and two RBIs.
HPU improved to 17-7, while Wisconsin-Stout fell to 1-7.
