Hawai'i Pacific scores sweep in baseball

Josh Guerra pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Alderson-Broaddus College, 1-0, yesterday to complete a sweep of a baseball doubleheader at Aloha Stadium.

The Sea Warriors (14-8) won the opener, 8-7, on Bryan Daguio's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Greg Benoit and Jherell Miller each had two hits in the second game for HPU, which scored the lone run in the bottom of the seventh against the visitors from Philippi, W.Va.

With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Sato grounded to shortstop Mark Jones, who elected to try for a double play rather than a forceout at home. Sato beat the throw to first as Chase Nakamura scored.

Alika Kuraoka had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Sea Warriors in the first game.

Justin Torok and Jerred Novotny homered for seven RBIs for Alderson-Broaddus (0-15).

MORE BASEBALL

Cal sweeps Hilo

Brennan Boesch and Josh Satin had four hits apiece and California overcame a 10-run sixth inning by Hawai'i-Hilo to beat the Vulcans, 13-10, and complete a sweep of a doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium.

The Golden Bears (16-8) won the second game, 2-1.

Sean Tamura and Chris Campbell each had two hits in the second game for Hilo (1-30), which scored 10 runs on seven hits and two errors in the sixth to tie the score at 10.

But Satin's bases-loaded RBI single in the seventh put Cal ahead to stay.

Cal scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on Allen Craig's single to win the second game.

SWIMMING

UH finishes 16th

University of Hawai'i junior Rui Wang placed third in platform diving and the Rainbow Wahine finished 16th yesterday at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

Wang, a native of Beijing, China, scored 466.15 points. Indiana's Cassandra Cardinell won with 501.45.

Georgia amassed 609.5 points to win the championship of the 39-school field.

SOFTBALL

Hawai'i loses, wins

Kaulana Gould hit a two-run double and Melissa Coogan pitched a five-hitter as Hawai'i defeated Loyola Marymount, 2-1, last night in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UH, which dropped a 5-0 decision to Miami earlier in the day, is 17-14 overall and 3-1 in the tournament.

Noelle Izumi and Kristi Yoshizawa each had two hits for UH in the nightcap. Izumi opened the sixth with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and took third on Tyleen Tausaga's single. After pinch-runner Dena DePompa stole second, Gould doubled to left to make it 2-0.

Caylin Hornish singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth for Loyola Marymount (13-11 overall, 3-2 tournament).

Courtney Salmon pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts in Miami's win over UH. Tracie Uchima batted 3 for 3 for the Rainbow Wahine.

BYUH takes two

Amanda Nino hit a grand slam to power Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 7-5 victory over Chaminade yesterday in the opener of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

BYUH also won the second game, 7-5, to improve to 10-14 overall and 2-4 in the PacWest.

Chaminade fell to 7-16 and 1-5.

Hilo wins a pair

Sarah Steele pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Minnesota-Morris, 8-0, yesterday to complete a sweep of a doubleheader at UHH Softball Field.

Miki Asamura had two hits and Haunani Haasenritter had two RBIs for Hilo (16-2).

Malinda Berglund singled with two outs in the fourth for the lone hit for Minnesota-Morris (1-9).

In the opener, Leo Sing Chow pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and Natalie Fujimoto had two hits and three RBIs in Hilo's 5-0 victory.

BOXING

Gibbon falls in final

Anne Gibbon of Honolulu lost in the 189-pound title bout of the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships yesterday at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Tameka Stephens, of Charlotte, N.C., outpointed Gibbon, 18-15.
