Woman's call leads to arrest

Advertiser Staff

A Honolulu man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly stole a van, broke into a car, and attempted to burglarize a home on the North Shore, police said.

At 10 a.m. Saturday a woman called police to report an attempted burglary at her neighbor's house, police said. The woman flagged down a responding officer and gave him a description of the man. The officer searched the area and found the man driving a white Toyota van.

The officer stopped the man and asked him to return to the house to clear up the matter. Meanwhile, the officer checked the van's license plate and found out that it was stolen, police said. The woman identified the man as the person who tried to break into her neighbor's house, police said.

A search of the stolen van revealed property taken during a car break-in at Pupukea. The man whose car was broken into showed up and identified his property, police said.

The suspect was arrested on charges including suspicion of attempted burglary, and vehicular theft.

Man tries to flee, is arrested

A 24-year-old Kalihi man was arrested yesterday after he tried to flee from officers while driving a stolen car, police said.

At 10:31 p.m. patrol officers responded to a call of loud noise coming from the rear of Wilson Elementary School. Officers arrived to find a 24-year-old man sitting in a car with a woman, police said. A check of the vehicle revealed that it was stolen, police said.

As the officers told the man to get out of the car, he instead reversed out of the parking lot, hitting one of the officers' arms in the process, police said. The man then hit a parked car on King Street and crashed into a concrete wall.

The man jumped out and tried to run but the officers ran him down and arrested him on suspicion of car theft, failing to render aid and fleeing the scene of an accident, police said.
