ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Help count humpbacks

Advertiser Staff

You've still got some time to spot whales — why not do it for a good cause? Volunteers are needed to count whales for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary's ocean count, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Saturday on O'ahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island.

Data is collected on population and distribution of humpbacks around the islands. To register, call 397-2651, ext. 253, on O'ahu; (808) 246-2860 on Kaua'i; or (888) 559-4253, ext. 253, on the Big Island. For details, see hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov.

Tidy up your life

Get organized in one of two ways, suggests Marcia Ramsland, author of "Simplify Your Life: Get Organized and Stay That Way!":

• Organize and simplify "as you go" each day. For instance, straighten up the kitchen each night, plus clean out one refrigerator shelf. In less than a week, the whole refrigerator will be done.

• Set aside time for a bigger project. When something like reorganizing a closet means you have to pull things apart, schedule a half day to get the whole project done.

Final word

Julie Delpy | Actress and screenwriter, 35, discussing her "healthy" lifestyle in the March issue of Organic Style magazine:

"I believe that having a healthy life, sleeping and eating right, is half the work (of looking good). I eat organic food and I drink only green tea — gallons of it when I'm writing. I smoke cigarettes, but organic ones."
