FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday to help the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Na Ala Hele Trails and Access O'ahu program maintain a two-acre forest area in Makiki Valley. Volunteers will water and plant native Hawaiian plants, do weeding and clearing, paint bridges and lay gravel. Water, gloves and tools provided; wear long pants, long-sleeved shirt, shoes or boots, and insect repellent and bring lunch. Meet at Makiki Forestry Baseyard. STOP ALIEN INVASION The O'ahu Invasive Species Committee will conduct a survey of fireweed, an invasive plant, on the Waimano trail above Pearl City, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. April 9. Volunteers should come prepared for a moderate 1-mile hike to the work site; bring long pants, hat, at least 3 liters of water, hiking shoes and lunch. Meet at Church of the Crossroads. POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning up and restoring the wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed 8:30-11:30 a.m. April 9. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. To sign up, contact Pauline Kawamata at 955-0100, ext. 18.

KANE'OHE BAY WETLAND PROJECT Volunteers are needed April 9 to help the Sierra Club clear a wetland of mangrove to create habitat for endangered water birds at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Kane'ohe Bay. Because the base is a secured military facility, volunteers must provide name and Social Security number in advance and bring a signed waiver. Contact Annette Kaohelauli'i at 235-5431.

DOLPHINS & WHALES Kim Andrews of the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology and Marc Lammers of the Oceanwide Science Institute will speak at a free event at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary office in Hawai'i Kai. Andrews will discuss the genetics of Hawaiian spinner dolphins, and Lammers will talk about the status of the North Pacific stock of humpback whales. The event is sponsored by the sanctuary and the Hawaiian Islands Stranding Resource Group. For more information, call 397-2651, ext. 252.

SPRING PLANT SALE The Lyon Arboretum Association will hold its annual Spring Plant Sale from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Blaisdell Center. There will be new plant introductions and demonstrations. Admission is free.

RECYCLING FOR CHANGE The Windward Ahupua'a Alliance will hold its next Recycling for Change beverage container drop-off 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the Triangle Site opposite the Model Airplane Field on Kapa'a Quarry Road in Kailua (look for off-white Volkswagen Beetle). GREENING YOUR YARD A free workshop on using compost in your garden will be held from 8:30-10:30 a.m. April 24 at Hawaiian Earth Products' Leeward site at 91-400 Malakole Road. KONA SCHOLARSHIP The Kona Outdoor Circle is offering a $1,000 college scholarship to students studying horticulture, landscaping, environmental studies, forestry, agriculture or related fields. Applicants must be full-time students and residents of West Hawai'i (North Kohala to Ka'u). April 30 is the deadline to apply.
